DANKSAGUNGEN

Zuallererst möchte ich erwähnen, dass diese umfassende Beschäftigung mit der Rückausrottung für mich ein unverhofftes und wunderbares Abenteuer war. Seinen Anfang nahm es auf einer Tanzfläche in den Außenbezirken von Chicago beim Third Coast Audio Festival – dort lernte ich Sara Robberson Lentz kennen, mit der ich später an einer Radiosendung über die »Kunst der Rückausrottung« im Rahmen einer Sendereihe zu Wissenschaft und Kreativität für Studio 360 auf WNYC zusammenarbeitete. Vielen Dank, Sara, dass du mit mir den ersten Schritt gewagt hast, und vielen Dank an dich, Ann Heppermann, für deine segensreiche Redaktionsarbeit.

Der nächste Nistplatz für meine Arbeit zu diesem Thema war ebenfalls ein Radiosender, diesmal jedoch die »Mothercorp«, wie man bei uns in Kanada sagt: CBC. Als ein Team der Sendereihe Ideas von CBC Radio One meine Idee zu einem einstündigen Beitrag über die Rückausrottung akzeptierte, ahnte ich noch nicht, was diese Möglichkeit letztendlich für mich bedeuten sollte. Es war nicht nur eine große Ehre, eine landesweit ausgestrahlte Sendung zu produzieren, sondern der Auftrag hatte den unendlich großen Vorteil, dass meine Geschichte einer außergewöhnlich begabten Regisseurin mit einer Vorliebe für die Wissenschaft zu Ohren kam: Ich lernte Sara Wolch kennen, meine Mentorin bei CBC Radio, der ich so dankbar dafür bin, dass ich von ihr lernen durfte. Vielen Dank, Sara, dass du es mir im Schnittraum nicht zu leicht gemacht hast. Ohne diese Radiobeiträge würde es kein Buch geben.

Und keiner der Radiobeiträge wäre ohne die vielen Fachleute und motivierenden Personen zustande gekommen, deren Ideen, Wis sen und Ansichten ich verwenden durfte. Dann erlebte ich eines Tages eine große Überraschung, als mich eine kurze und knappe E-Mail erreichte, in der in etwa stand: »Tolle Radiosendung, wie wäre es mit einem Buch?«, unterzeichnet vom Leiter eines Verlagshauses. Ich musste sie dreimal lesen, bis ich mir sicher war, dass es sich nicht um eine automatisch generierte Spam-Nachricht handelte. Und ich bin nach wie vor überglücklich, dass dem nicht so war. Tausendfacher Dank gilt Rob Sanders, dem Verlagsleiter von Greystone Books, der mir einen solchen Vertrauensvorschuss gewährte und spürte, dass ich das Projekt stemmen konnte. Seine große Begeisterung für das Thema war für mich von Anfang an eine riesige Unterstützung. Die Zusammenarbeit mit Nancy Flight, meiner äußerst kompetenten Lektorin bei Greystone Books, war mir ein Vergnügen, und von ihrem untrüglichen Gespür dafür, wie sich ein Satz noch eindeutiger formulieren lässt, haben diese Seiten unendlich profitiert.
